Indeed, many brands warn about potentially irritating ingredients in the product without specifying which ingredients are present. However, laundry detergents sold in supermarkets are very often composed of a combination of more or less toxic chemicals.

You can also make your own laundry using 5 commercially available ingredients. This recipe is available on the David Suzuki Foundation website. You will need:
- 1 bar of soap finely shredded
- 1 cup sodium carbonate
- 1/2 cup of citric acid
- 1/2 cup of baking soda
- 1/4 cup of coarse salt
Ingredients to avoid
- 1,4-dioxane: cancérogène possible
- Acide alkyle benzène sulfonique: irritant et corrosif
- Agents de blanchiment
- Alcools éthoxylés contaminés par du 1,4-dioxane
- Ammoniaque: irritant et corrosif pour la peau, les yeux et les voies respiratoires et digestives
- Ethanol (alcool éthylique): cancérogène possible (confirmé chez l'animal), irritant pour la peau, les yeux, les muqueuses et les voies respiratoires, neurotoxique
- Naphtalène: cancérogène possible (confirmé chez l'animal), irritant pour la peau et les yeux
- Parfums synthétiques: allergènes
- Phénol: irritant et corrosif pour la peau, les yeux et les voies respiratoires et digestives
- Sulfate sodique de lauryle: irritant, peut causer une dermatite de contact
